An Icelandic-Viking Story “Northman”

Northman, the new movie of Robert Eggers, the director of The Lighthouse, draws attention with its cast!

“Northman”, in which Alexander Skarsgård plays the Viking prince Amleth, hits theaters on April 22. Robert Eggers, whom we know with his thriller films, was in the director's chair. The remaining cast of the film consists of famous names such as Anya Taylor-Joy, Willem Dafoe, Nicole Kidman, Bill Skarsgård, Ethan Hawke and Icelandic singer Björk.

If we take a look at the characters in the movie; Nicole Kidman plays Amleth's mother, Queen Gudrún. Ethan Hawke appears in the role of King Aurvandil in the movie, and the iconic musician Björk plays the role of the oracle in the movie.

The movie takes place in Iceland during the Viking Ages. The film is about Amleth's quest for revenge, whose father was murdered by her uncle Fjolnir. Because of its story, it was confirmed by director Eggers that it resembles William Shakespeare's Hamlet and was inspired by it. We can say that Amleth, an old Scandinavian story, allowed Shakespeare to write his own play, Hamlet.

The Northman, which is produced by Focus Features, was originally set to begin filming in Northern Ireland in March 2020. However, Northman was among the films whose shooting was postponed due to the coronovirus. There was no movement in the film until August 2020. Delayed filming was completed in December 2020.

You can watch the film, which shows the nature of Iceland in a beautiful way, in theaters on Friday, April 22.
